Wall displays

We have made a great start to 2017 and are starting to put our work up in our classroom. 

We have been reading the book 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and have created a display to go alongside the book.

We have also been working on writing about ourselves to show everyone who we are. Above you will find our presented 'flags' and our Andy Warhol inspired photos.

Writing Complex Sentences

This week for writing we have been looking at using different sentence lengths to add interest to our writing. We have been learning to write complex sentences. Here are some of our sentences. 

Conversation Writing

For our writing this week we are continuing to work on including speech in our writing. We were given a picture of a father and son. We needed to write a conversation between they would have between them. Here are our conversations:

Punctuation

This week we are working on punctuation. We are writing sentences that use full stops (periods), question marks and exclamation points. Check out our individual blogs for students examples of them using punctuation.

Opunake Flooding News Report

Here is the first of our News Reports that are being created this week for our writing. We have used our recent flooding to work on writing news reports. Keep an eye out over the next few days for the other news reports.

Reach for the Stars - Matariki Art and Writing

Last term we looked at stories based on Matariki. Here is our new wall display with our hands and our writing. The class had to work with a partner to write a sentence using a language feature we have learnt throughout the year. Some students wrote a sentence using alliteration, personification or a simile.

Our Treasures (taonga)

 Last week we looked at treasures that families might have from family members relating to Anzac's and WWI. Students thought about what treasures they have and some even brought them in share with the class. Below are some photos of treasures (or taongas) that are important to us.

Antonym (Opposite) Posters

We have had a busy exciting week with our Reading and Writing. We have been reading about and discussing the differences between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. This has lead to us writing to different people who live in different countries. We will be posting our emails onto our blog (both our individual and our class blog) when we have finished typing them up.

We have also been discussing antonyms and creating posters demonstrating words opposite in meaning to another (e.g. bad and good).

Emails between Friends

We have added a new page to our Class Blog. Please check out our 'Emails between Friends' page. You will find out what we are doing in our Reading/Writing this week and read about similarities and differences between Opunake, NZ and other countries, especially in the Northern Hemisphere.

Zealous Zoo Writing

This week for writing we looked at a poem by Pie Corbett called Zealous Zoo. Each sentence used alliteration to write about a different animal. After reading Zealous Zoo we created our own sentences. Here is our class examples.

Week 1-2 Writing: My World

For the past week we have been finding out about each other in Room 15: Totara. 

We have been creating a piece of writing identifying what we like to look at, listen to, smell, taste and touch.

We looked at a poem by Pie Corbett to help get an idea of how to write our own poem.

This week we have had a great time doing our writing. We have been focusing on personification. We looked at a poem about a landscape. We then tried creating our own poems using different images.

Writing and Maths Preparation

We have hit the ground running for our first day back. 

Today in writing we watched a video clip about a boy travelling to the moon in a rocket. We began discussing what holiday we would travel back to and throughout the week we will be sharing our diary/recount with others. Lets see what the week will bring and where in the world we will travel back to.

In the afternoon we began creating our own rockets. We will be using the rockets during maths to record how far each rocket can travel. We will be looking at mm, cm, and m.
